The thermocouple input modules allow thermocouple temperature sensors to be directly connected to the PLC without the need for external signal processors like transducers or transmitters. All analog and digital processing of the thermocouple signals are performed on the module.

The THM409 and 449 (four channels), THM809 and 889 (eight channels), and the THM166 (sixteen channels) have a resolution of 0.5°C or °F and report temperature values to the PLC %AI I/O table in 0.5°C or °F increments.

These models feature open circuit detection, where the temperature value written to the %AI register goes to its maximum value upon an open circuit condition. The THM449, THM889, and THM166 also feature %I alarm bits which energize on the same open circuit condition.

The THM166 offers superior channel density with 16 input channels per module. Field wiring is connected to a special high density, 32 postion removable terminal block. These modules provide an excellent cost per channel, with a minimum amount of resolution and circuit protection.

These thermocouple input modules operate exactly the same as Horner's standard thermocouples but include enhanced resolution and/or isolation. The THM668 is a six channel thermocouple input module with 1000VAC backplane (bus) isolation and 250VAC channel-to-channel isolation. Temperature values are reported in increments of 0.5°C, 0.5°F, 0.1°C, or 0.1°F. to 6 %AI input registers. Each channel can be configured for a specific type of sensor wire. Open circuit and setpoint alarms are provided. An autodetect external AD592 cold junction compensation feature is available on these modules. This allows cold junction compensation to be accomplished in a remote isothermal temperature strip, with standard copper wire run from the remote terminal strip to the module.

The THM665 is identical to the 668 with the addition of a 50Hz notch filter (European line frequency) and the THM666 is identical to the 668 with the addition of a 60Hz notch filter (US line frequency). The purpose of these filters is to eliminate noise generated by power lines.

The THM884 and 888 provide 8 channels with high resolution (0.1°C). Revisions H and later provide the autodetect cold junction compensation feature. Otherwise both models operate exactly as the THM668. The THM888 additionally incorporates a 60Hz notch filter.

A remote DIN rail mounted isothermal terminal strip is available from Horner, the HE693ISOBLK.

These Series 90-70 modules provide eight (THM260) or sixteen (THM160) channels of thermocouple input with 0.1°C resolution. Ten thermocouple types are supported; J, K, N, T, E, R, S, B, C, and JX (extended J). Thermocouple type is selectable on a channel-by-channel basis. The module allows the direct connection of thermocouple sensors, without the need for external signal conditioners and standard analog input modules. The thermocouple voltage is converted to a digital value, cold junction compensated, and the appropriate temperature value is reported directly to %AI registers in 0.1° or 0.5° increments. The temperature value may be reported in °C or °F increments. Various configuration parameters, as well as high and low setpoints for each channel, are available using %AQ output registers.

The THM260 adds the feature of thermocouple wire resistance measurement. This provides an additional safety feature in critical applications (preventative maintenance for thermocouple wire breakdown). The THM260 also provides some additional filtering.
